The mutated Omicron and weather conditions caused the cancellation of more than 2,700 flights in the United States of America.
The American website FlightAware, as quoted by AFP, reported that the number of canceled flights in the United States reached 2,725, pointing out that this number constitutes half of the number of canceled flights worldwide, which amounted to 4,618 flights so far.
According to the same website, the American airline, Skywest, is the most affected by the cancellation decisions, which affected 23 percent of its flights.
The site pointed out that Chicago airports were the most affected American airports by cancellation due to weather conditions, amid expectations that a snow storm would sweep the city at night.
Global air transport is also witnessing severe disruption due to the highly contagious Omicron, as many pilots and flight crew members are absent due to infection with the virus or contact with infected people, which forces them to quarantine themselves, forcing airlines to cancel flights due to the lack of a sufficient number of employees.
International airlines canceled about 7,500 flights to and from several international countries over the weekend.
