A large fire broke out today (Sunday) in the South African Parliament complex in the city of Cape Town, whose skies were filled with smoke and flames.
The Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, Patricia de Lille, said the fire started on the third floor of an office building in the compound and spread to the National Assembly building, where Parliament sits.
"The fire is now in the rooms of the National Assembly," de Lille said.
"This is a very sad day for democracy, because Parliament is the home of our democracy."
Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services spokesman Jermaine Carles said no casualties were reported.
He said the initial report of the fire was received from security guards at the scene around 6:00 a.m. and 35 firefighters were trying to contain the flames.
