A 60-year-old man perished last night (Sunday to Monday) in a fire that broke out in an apartment in Ramla.
Police have begun investigating the circumstances of the fire.
A policeman who was slightly injured by smoke inhalation is seeking medical attention.
Ramla police officers were called to the scene upon receiving the report of the fire that broke out on Yitzhak Ben Zvi Street in the city.
Police and firefighters began evacuating the building's occupants and after taking control of the fire, the man was found unconscious in the apartment.
His death was determined on the spot.

In another case, four people were rescued from a fire that broke out last night in Bat Yam.
Three of them were injured, one of them in critical condition and two in critical condition.
Three dogs were also rescued.
The fire started around four in the morning in an apartment on Simcha Holzberg Street in the city.
Four teams of firefighters arrived at the scene and identified the burning on the third floor of the building.
The stairwell was choked with smoke and huge heat radiation came out of the apartment.
Crews immediately began rapid fire-fighting operations, as well as scans to locate trapped people and release smoke.
Those staying in the apartment were rescued and evacuated to the hospital, as well as the dogs evacuated for veterinary care.
A fire investigator was called to the scene and determined that the circumstances of the fire broke out as a result of an electrical failure.
