A BMW driver in Ratingen was apparently not in the mood for a police check.

Instead of stopping, the 19-year-old accelerated and hit a tree.

A BMW driver ignored police stop signs and sped away.

The 19-year-old came off the street and crashed into a tree, as the police announced to Mettmann.

At around 2:20 a.m., the 19-year-old was driving his 3 Series BMW on Kaiserswerther Strasse in the direction of Düsseldorf when the police officers behind it decided to check it.

However, according to the police, he ignored "multiple stop signals" and even accelerated.

The BMW driver then turned onto Dieselstrasse, where he lost control of the car at the junction with Benzstrasse.

He slid straight into a tree to the right of the road.

The 19-year-old and his 17-year-old co-driver then left the completely destroyed car and tried to escape.

The driver was caught by the police shortly afterwards, and the passenger escaped.

It quickly became clear why the 19-year-old had fled.

He had borrowed the BMW from his father, but without his father knowing.

In addition, he doesn't even have a driver's license himself.

"For fear of the consequences, he fled from the control of the officers," said the police.

The underage co-driver then returns to the scene of the accident and confirmed the 19-year-old's statements.

Both were unharmed.

The driver now awaits two criminal proceedings.

In addition, the BMW had to be towed.

The accident caused damage of around 18,000 euros.
