Citybus issued a notice at the beginning of last month (December 10) stating that starting from January 1 this year, its 61R and 88R non-franchised residential bus service routes will no longer accept cash payment for fares. Passengers need to use Octopus or designated Pay the fare by electronic payment method.

After stepping into New Year's Day, some netizens photographed that the current bus running on the relevant route has covered the position of the cash box, reminding passengers that cash is not accepted for paying the fare.

Related practices have aroused heated discussion among netizens. Some people worry that bus companies will gradually refuse to accept cash in the future, which may cause inconvenience to passengers. Others claim that the route is not a franchised bus route, and the practice of not accepting cash on residential buses (or village buses) has always existed. , Don’t worry about it.

In response to "Hong Kong 01" enquiry, Citybus stated that 61R and 88R are non-franchised bus routes served by residents. Most passengers pay their fares by electronic payment. There is no plan to extend the non-cash payment arrangement to Franchise bus routes.

The two non-franchised residential bus service routes that no longer accept cash payments are from City One Shatin to Lam Tin Station and 61R and 88R in Central.

According to the notice issued by Citybus, passengers can only use Octopus, QR code (Alipay, UnionPay QuickPass), touch payment (VISA, Master, UnionPay) and mobile payment (Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay) to pay the fare, and list locations near each station that can add value to the Octopus.

Some netizens believe that if passengers only have cash, they will not be able to take the relevant village bus. The bus company should not refuse to collect cash. "If the phone has no electricity or can't you just count the phone?", "No car without a mobile phone can be used", " I can’t get on the car without an Octopus.” The speculation is to reduce the cost of handling cash.

However, there are comments that 61R and 88R are non-franchised residential bus service routes. The main service targets are residents of Shatin City One rather than ordinary passengers. Many similar village bus services do not accept cash. I think there is no need to worry about it for the time being. Generally, franchised bus routes will not accept cash.

Citybus stated in the notice that since January 1, passengers can only use Octopus or other electronic payment methods to pay for their fares when taking 61R and 88R buses.
