First Ride: Indian Challenger

2022-01-03T11:48:28.168Z

Beneath the classic American look, the Challenger hides a powerful engine, aluminum chassis and succulent assemblies. The result is unlike anything else

American motorcycles, rich in cc and presence, may be seen from the side, as they all belong to the same genre.

As in any culture, here too there are clear truths, old definitions and a clear division into roles.

And as in any culture, under the auspices of the modern age, new interpretations of old terms are emerging.

So while to most people the Indian Challenger in the pictures looks like another big and impressive American motorcycle, it actually belongs to a very clear stream.

And also introduces some innovations along the way.

Indian Challenger is a bugger (a definition that in itself can open up some philosophical discussions), who wants to tread where his peers have never walked.

For example, it is equipped with an aluminum chassis - something that can be found more on a sporty end motorcycle and less on motorcycles of its kind.

It also adds to it advanced assemblies like an inverted fork, a quality rear shock absorber, a radial braking system and more.

Again, not exactly the list of normative assemblies for a motorcycle of this type, from these sources.

Directly following the list above, there is also an engine here.

1,769 cc from it.

Two huge pistons that are not afraid to climb up the RPM and produce 122 hp and 18.1 kg.

And of course, there are all sorts of other extras here that must be on a motorcycle of this type in this price tag.

This includes a large touch screen, electrically adjustable windscreen, cruise control, riding mode selection, smart key and more.

The seat is quite low, the legs are extended forward, the arms are also (a little too much).

The right hand rotates the throttle and the challenger flies forward.

Its reaction speed and power, amounts of torque spilled into the rear wheel and pushing that tonage forward resolutely.

In the sporty riding mode out of the three, howls from the rear tire enter the repertoire and the forceful feeling intensifies.

In the midst of all this, the big engine manages to both be smooth, and also play V-Twin pompom in the background, without shaking or getting tired.

It is a motorcycle built for a long and leisurely cruise, one that goes through long turns, preferably with good music in the audio system.

What is surprising here is the accuracy and willingness to turn, even in tighter places.

The suspensions, as well as the enormous weight, produce an excellent grip.

It is not a motorcycle that contorts and collapses under the load.

Even the tilting interval here allows for a long and deep descent into references.

Brembo radial brakes are very effective at shaving speed, lacking some initial bite but linear and of appropriate power.

Although all the assemblies here allow for vigorous riding (again, relative to what is acceptable in this category), the Challenger feels excellent in much more relaxed riding.

The wind protection in its upper position does an excellent job, the cruise control allows you to remove load from the hands and the kilometers pass easily under its wheels.

And always in the background, is the knowledge that it is possible to downshift a few gears here, and move up to a completely different pace.

As usual with such luxury motorcycles, all this goodness comes at a price.

But given the cost of similar buffers on the market, and the impressive specs of this Indian, the pricing here makes perfect sense.

We are not suggesting that a motorcycle, which can cost a quarter of a million shekels with this or that equipment, is accessible, cheap or sensible.

But compared to the competition, it's just that.

Deficiencies?

Tools of this kind are not the first (or second) choice for someone whose main life revolves around big city traffic jams.

You can of course ride it even in these conditions, but it's a bit like drinking soup with a fork.

This motorcycle was born into space.

Just like a purebred horse.

And if we came to horses, we would also mention the saddlebags that cowboys used to put on and from there came the term bagger, up to motorcycles like this Indian.
