For the first time, a transgender student wins the presidency of the Federation of Students of the University of Costa Rica (FEUCR), the largest in the country.

But the leadership of Alhana Chavarría, 22, started earlier.

The young woman says that she is now motivated to extend her fight for improvements in education and human rights, to university classrooms and to the rest of the country.

"Human rights must be given and not negotiated," Chavarría told CNN.
