The head of the Italian Scientific Foundation Gimpi, Nino Cartabelluta, warned today that the Omicron mutant of the Corona virus threatens to reach two million infections and fill hospitals with patients.

And the Italian Aki news agency quoted Cartapellotta as saying that the Omicron mutant “causes a huge growth in infection in the country, as it does not correspond to the increase in hospitalizations. Among the 100,000 infected people, 1,100 people are hospitalized in hospital rooms and 120 are in intensive care,” warning of the possibility of access to Two million positive cases.

Cartapellotta expressed the hope that increasing booster doses of vaccines would help lower the virulence of the omicron mutant.

For its part, the Italian government announced in a statement that half of the country's provinces are yellow areas as of today, as four provinces have left the white color range.

Transition from the white zone to the yellow zone occurs when the weekly infection rate is equal to or greater than 50 cases per 100,000 people.

The statement indicated that with the new measures imposed by the government and valid until January 31, there are only few differences between the white and yellow regions, which is the obligation to wear protective masks in the open air.
