The new deadline for opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu for the Likud leadership primaries is next May - Walla learned !.

According to Likud officials, Netanyahu is interested in pinning the Likud-led primaries for the Likud conference, which is scheduled to take place in December 2022, and is seriously considering bringing the conference forward to May so that the double election will take place in five months.

Linking the two election campaigns - to the party leadership and to the conference - will allow the Likud to avoid the appearance of wasting money and unnecessary elections, since the party will in any case prepare for election day with the distribution of ballots and polling stations and the like.

No response was received from Netanyahu's office.

Stopped in the past.

Netanyahu has been trying to get ahead of the Likud-led primaries since the party left power in June last year, to establish his power and status in the opposition as well, but he has meanwhile been halted by internal opposition.

According to the Likud constitution, elections for the party leadership and the list are held after the dissolution of the Knesset or six months before the next election date.

Therefore, in order to advance the primaries, it depends on the decision-making institutions and especially on the chairman of the center, the Constitution Committee, MK Haim Katz.

Katz has publicly stated that he opposes advancing the primaries and that elections for the party leadership will only take place if the Knesset elections are brought forward or before the next elections.

The chairman of the Likud secretariat, Israel Katz, also strongly opposes early elections. The party has additional costs.

Will eventually agree.

The only Likud official who has so far announced that he intends to run against the Netanyahu leadership of the movement is MK Yuli Edelstein. And Israel Katz, announced that they would run for the Likud presidency only after the Netanyahu era, and according to the party, both would prefer to postpone the next election as much as possible. - But only after Netanyahu retires, which is not currently on the horizon.

Internal party preoccupation increased

In recent weeks, Netanyahu has intensified his internal preoccupation with the party and is leading a war of attrition against the group of new Likudniks and MKs identified with them, led by the chairman of the secretariat, Israel Katz.

Netanyahu and other Likud officials such as Yariv Levin and Miri Regev tried to promote a sweeping disqualification of group members, who identify with and support liberal candidates and are perceived by many in the Likud as hostile to left-wing elements aimed at influencing the Likud from within.

Netanyahu sharply attacked Katz and accused him of trying to block the move in order to preserve the support of the new Likudniks.

The war on the new Likudniks, among other things, is also related to the elections to the Likud conference, the branch councils and the party center, which have not taken place for about a decade.

Senior Likud members fear that the new Likudniks, who until now were only functioning in the party, will also be elected to the conference and the center, thus increasing their power and influence in party decision-making.
