They stand on the street in bright yellow safety vests and help the children in the Würmtal to get to school safely.

In Neuried, a school assistant has now been honored for her long-term commitment.

The community isn't the only one looking for volunteers.

Würmtal

- Karin Weiler, who is on the way to school, has been awarded a certificate and a golden badge of honor for her social commitment by the district of Munich: for 21 years she has been guiding schoolchildren across intersections in Neuried on a voluntary basis.

Friendly, helpful, reliable and responsible as she is, she is very much appreciated by the children and parents, according to the district office's press release.

Five euros per half hour use

Corinna Pflästerer is particularly pleased about the honor and long-term commitment from Weilers. She and her husband Martin Pflästerer have been swinging the white and red trowel in Neuried for twelve years. Six years ago, the two of them also took over the organization of the local school helpers and are always looking for people like Karin Weiler who are willing to get involved. Because even if Corinna Pflästerer is happy to be involved in “meaningful and important work”, she would gradually like to let her office run out. This is currently not possible: "We have a major personnel problem". In addition to the 18 to 20 helpers, three to five others would be needed in Neuried who could take on duty at least once a week from 7.30 a.m. to 8 a.m. at one of the four following locations:at the traffic lights on Mangfallstrasse and Am Haderner Winkel, at the zebra crossing on Haderner Weg or at the large intersection on Münchner Strasse. Interested parties can email schulwegdienst.neuried@gmail.com or call Corinna Pflästerer on 0172/897 85 24 or Martin Pflästerer on 0173/382 84 51. As compensation, the community pays 5 euros per half-hour effort. After consultation with the municipality, there are no longer any lunch services since this year. It is too difficult to find helpers for the various closing times of the school and lunch care between 11.30 a.m. and 4.30 p.m.com or by phone to Corinna Pflästerer on 0172/897 85 24 and Martin Pflästerer on 0173/382 84 51. For 21 years a helper on the way to school

In Planegg, the situation looks similar, according to the school assistant coordinator Anett Prenzlow.

“I look for more helpers every year”.

In particular, at the traffic lights by the former cleaning in Münchner Straße, two school helpers are missing for the early shifts from 7.30 a.m. to 8 a.m.

Planeggers who are interested in taking on one of these shifts or one of the currently sparsely staffed lunchtime shifts due to a lack of volunteers can contact Anett Prenzlow on 859 62 14.

She herself has been helping Planegger school children across the street for 21 years.

"I still have a lot of fun." As in Neuried, the municipality of Planegg pays 5 euros in compensation for every half-hour assignment.

Tenth graders are also involved as school guides

The 80 or so Gräfelfingen school helpers receive the same amount, 35 of whom are in action in the Lochham district alone. In addition to 20 adults, 15 tenth graders from the Kurt-Huber-Gymnasium are currently involved there. Coordinator Eleonore Spinner would still come in handy for the morning shifts from 7.20 a.m. to around 8 a.m. Here Monika Schlosser and Ortrun Preuß take over the organization. "It is important to us that the school helpers feel comfortable and not forced to work," says Schlosser. Around 45 helpers are currently available at six Graefelfinger crossings between 7.25 and 7.55 a.m.As of this year, helpers have also been accompanying the primary school students safely across the lane on Steinkirchner Strasse at the junction with Bahnhofstrasse. Monika Schlosser would be happy to have more helpers on her way to school. "It is best to have a relationship with the schoolchildren so that they feel connected to the service and, if possible, do not travel during school."

20 helpers for seven transitions

In Krailling, the team around coordinator Silke Bürkle-Schiffbauer is currently well staffed with 20 helpers for seven crossings. Just at a zebra crossing in Pentenrieder Strasse, “it would still be nice to have a helper for lunch”. Depending on the end of school or lunchtime care, this is between 11.20 a.m. and 3.35 p.m. This point is particularly important on the one hand because of the “cyclists shooting around the corner” and on the other hand because of the new development on Margaretenstrasse, due to which the children have had to be guided twice over the dangerous Pentenrieder Strasse in a zigzag course for a long time (we reported). The community is already working on a safer solution, but no result has yet been achieved. Anyone who has time to help out at lunchtime, including parents of primary school children, can contact the coordinator by email at s.schiffbauer@gmx.de report. The community pays 6 euros per mission as compensation.

"School pilots are so important because drivers often do not apply the brakes until they see the yellow vest," says Bürkle-Schiffbauer.

She herself has been a school walker for over eight years.

“I still really enjoy doing it.

It's so nice when a child shows me their latest tooth gap and I can help if a cap has been forgotten or a rucksack slips. "
