Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi said today (Monday) that former US President Donald Trump must stand trial for the assassination of Quds Force commander Qassem Suleimani or Tehran avenge his assassination.

Suleimani, who commanded the Quds Force in the Revolutionary Guards, was assassinated in a UAV attack in Baghdad on January 3, 2020.

Speaking on the second anniversary of the assassination of the senior general, Raisi said that " "Suleimani, Muslims will avenge the death of our martyr," he said.

Under Islamic law in Iran, a convicted murderer may face the death penalty unless the victim's family agrees to receive "blood money" as part of a reconciliation agreement.

Iran's Attorney General Muhammad Jaafar Montazari told official television that judicial officials had contacted authorities in nine other countries after identifying 127 suspects in the case, including 74 U.S. citizens.

"Former President (Trump) the criminal is at the top of the list," he said.

Yesterday, Iran read in a letter it sent to the UN Security Council to punish the United States and Israel, which it claimed was involved in Suleimani's assassination. Days after the assassination, the United States told the UN that its assassination was a step of self-defense.

Attorney General William Barre at the time said Trump had clear authority to order Suleimani's assassination and that he was a "legitimate military target."
