Enter B.1.640.2 was detected among passengers who came to the EU from Cameroon • Researchers fear that the new variant may be highly contagious, but believe that it will not overcome the distribution of the omicron

A new variant of the corona virus has been identified by researchers in the south of France after 12 cases of it were discovered among travelers returning to the country from Cameroon in West Africa.

The new variant, named B.1.640.2, has 46 mutations and 37 genetic deletions which makes researchers fear that it speaks at a very high level and may even be able to overcome antibodies that travel from vaccine and recovery from coronary heart disease.

The strain was discovered by the Institute for the Study of Infectious Diseases in the Mediterranean Basin in France during the month of December.

The nickname attached to the new strain is the name of the research institute discovered by the IHU.

All those infected with the new variant were found around the city of Marseille in the south of France and all of them returned, or came in contact with returnees from Cameroon.

No study has yet been conducted in an attempt to understand whether this is a common strain in the African country or whether the passengers were infected by another passenger who came from another country.

The variant has not yet been discovered in other countries but has been classified by the United Nations World Health Organization as a cause for concern.
