A policeman and ten prisoners were killed in Haiti during an attempt to escape from a prison in the suburb of Port-au-Prince.

"The attempted escape took place in Croix-de-Bouquet prison last Friday afternoon, when an unspecified number of prisoners in possession of firearms took three policemen and a nurse hostage while trying to escape from the prison, which is the second largest prison in the country," Haitian police spokesman Gary DeRozier said, according to Agence France-Presse. .

He added that the prisoners were able, as they advanced inside the high-security prison, to seize three additional weapons, including a submachine gun, which were stored in one of the offices, explaining that immediately reinforcements were called and specialized police units intervened and the exchange of fire began, and when it ended, the police found four pieces of firearms that were She was surreptitiously brought to the prison as well as on the three pieces seized by the prisoners.

DeRozier indicated that three policemen were also seriously injured during the attempt to escape the prisoners, pointing out that following the incident, a policeman was arrested on suspicion of involvement in the smuggling of weapons to the prison, while the investigation into the circumstances of this case continues.

It is reported that in February 2021, more than 400 prisoners escaped in broad daylight from the same prison in an escape operation during which 25 people were killed, including the prison director.

An investigation conducted by a local human rights organization concluded that this massive escape would not have happened had it not been for the severe shortage of guards and the complicity of some of the prisoners.
