According to a research survey conducted by the Lung Cancer Concern Project “Breathing Hope” a few days ago, 64% of Hong Kong people said they knew that lung cancer could be detected early through screening without symptoms, but 80% of the respondents had not considered using low-dose computer scans.

According to a recent research survey conducted by the Lung Cancer Concern Project "Respiratory Hope", 64% of Hong Kong people said that they knew that lung cancer could be detected early through screening without symptoms, but 80% of the respondents had not considered low-dose computer scans (Low- dose Computed Tomography) for lung cancer screening.

In addition, lung cancer is the number one killer of cancer in Hong Kong, and it is also the most common cancer in Hong Kong. However, this survey indicated that more than 60% (63%) of the respondents believed that their chance of developing lung cancer was lower than other cancers.

Dr. Tsai Tiancheng (right), vice chairman of the Asian Cancer Research and Education Alliance, and Miss Li Yue'e (left), spokesperson for "Hope for Breathing", announced the details of the "See Through the Lungs" project.

"Breathing Hope" launched a new "See Through the Lungs" program, launched a simple online questionnaire for lung cancer risk assessment, and worked with the Asian Cancer Research and Education Alliance to provide free low-dose computer scans for lung cancer screening for some high-risk individuals.

According to a survey of 1,000 Hong Kong residents this time, the lack of knowledge and understanding may be the reason why Hong Kong residents are discouraged from undergoing lung cancer screening.

87% of the interviewees agree that there is not much promotion or education on lung cancer screening in the market, so that they do not have enough knowledge to decide whether or not to screen; 57% of the interviewees think that lung cancer is uncomfortable or have symptoms before lung cancer screening is needed; and Half (50%) of the interviewees believe that there is no need for lung cancer screening unless requested by medical staff.

Dr. Tsai Tiancheng, vice chairman of the Asian Cancer Research and Education Alliance, said: "The effective use of low-dose computer scans for lung cancer screening can detect lung cancer early and significantly reduce patient mortality. In addition, in this survey, there are many Interviewees believe that their own low chance of developing lung cancer is also worthy of attention. Both smokers and non-smokers have a chance of developing lung cancer. Although smoking rates are declining in East Asia (including Hong Kong), the incidence of lung cancer among non-smokers is It has been rising steadily."

The study also showed that Hong Kong people have a clear lack of understanding of lung cancer screening.

Eighty percent of respondents mistakenly believe that chest X-rays can effectively screen for lung cancer.

In addition, 81% of respondents did not know what a low-dose computer scan was.

Low-dose computerized scanning is a non-invasive examination method that can provide more detailed images than chest X-ray examinations.

This technology is also currently the only recommended lung cancer screening method4. This screening method can effectively detect early lung cancer so that patients can receive treatment early.

Overall, compared to colorectal cancer (27%), breast cancer (18%) and cervical cancer (20%), only 10% of the respondents said they had tested for lung cancer.

"Breathing Hope" and the Asian Cancer Research and Education Alliance will support 300 of them at risk for free low-dose computerized lung cancer screening at local clinics.

After receiving the results of the questionnaire, those who meet the conditions for participating in the free screening can directly contact the Asian Cancer Research and Education Alliance to make an appointment for the screening.
