Austria has opposed a plan presented by the European Union Commission calling for the adoption of classifications that consider natural gas and nuclear power plants as green, environmentally friendly and climate-friendly.
"The project of the European Union Commission, which considers nuclear energy a source of sustainable green energy, is subject to doubts and reservations, rejected by the Austrian Green Party and the Austrian government," Austrian Environment Minister Leonore Geoffsler said in a letter sent to the European Commission in Brussels.
Geifsler warned of a plan to dispose of hazardous radioactive waste until 2050, stressing that hiding nuclear waste is unacceptable because it poses a threat to the environment and the climate, explaining that these plans are inconsistent with the energy policy and relevant agreements of the member states of the European Union.
It is noteworthy that Austria is one of the countries that strongly opposes the use of nuclear energy and does not have any nuclear reactor on its soil, and the Green Party threatened to file a lawsuit against the European Commission if those plans were approved.
