Drivers will have to upgrade their first-aid kits this year.

If you do not do it, the first aid kit is considered incomplete and a fine may be imposed.

Munich - It is a little noticed, but all the more important piece of equipment in the car: the first-aid kit.

Normally, when buying a car, a check is made to see whether a first aid kit is available - after that it is forgotten.

This year at the latest you should remember the first-aid kit.

Because from 2022 you have to upgrade it, it has to be supplemented with two mouth and nose covers.

However, it is not yet clear whether it has to be an FFP2 mask or whether a medical mask is sufficient.

Car first aid kits must be supplemented with masks: the rule also applies after the pandemic

It is also not yet clear when exactly the new regulation will come into force.

Because the "mask requirement" in the car should come with the next change in the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO) in the course of this year.

What is certain, however, is that it will also apply to the time after the corona pandemic.

In order to avoid possible fines, the first-aid kit should be expanded as quickly as possible to include two mouth and nose covers.

To be on the safe side, you should get FFP2 masks.

Because if your car does not have a first aid kit or if it is not complete, this is a violation of the StVZO.

As a rule, a fine of five euros is then due.

If you are the vehicle owner and you let someone else drive your car with an incomplete first-aid kit, you have to pay ten euros.

Car first aid kit must be supplemented with masks: also check the expiry date

If you are in the process of upgrading your first aid kit, you should also check the expiration date printed on the box.

Because bandages or compresses have an expiration date because they are packaged sterile.

As a rule, the shelf life of the materials is at least four years.

If the use-by date of certain dressing materials or the entire first-aid kit has passed, they should be replaced.

Otherwise, at the next general inspection (HU), a complaint can be made as a minor defect.

A traffic check threatens a fine of up to ten euros.

Car first aid kits must be supplemented with masks: even quads must have a first aid kit with them

Who in Germany has to have a first aid kit at all?

According to the StVZO, this applies to all trucks and cars, including quads.

Buses with more than 22 seats even have to carry two first-aid kits.

Motorcycles, wheelchairs, tractors and work machines in agricultural or forestry operations are exempt from the obligation.

When buying a first-aid kit, make sure that it complies with DIN standard No. 13164.

This defines the exact content.

If you want to assemble the first-aid kit yourself, you must obtain the individual parts specified in the DIN standard.

According to ADAC, these are so far:

  • 1 adhesive plaster, DIN 13019-A, 5 mx 2.5 cm

    4 first-aid bandages, DIN 13019-E, 10 cm x 6 cm

What to do with expired parts from the car first-aid kit: Dispose of or donate

What can you do with an expired first aid kit?

The expired contents should not be taken into the household pharmacy, but disposed of.

Because the material should also be sterile for first aid services at home.

It would be better, however, to give the expired products to a provider of first aid courses such as the Red Cross.

They are usually grateful for such donations.
