This Monday, six beekeepers installed 25 boxes with honeycombs in front of the Palacio de La Moneda, in the center of Santiago, Chile, as a protest against the serious drought that affects the southern country and also the lack of financing and public policies that protect these insects.

Beekeepers demanding government help in the midst of a severe drought are detained during a protest in Santiago de Chile this Monday.

The demonstration occurred around 9:30 a.m. local time, a time of great influx of pedestrians and vehicular traffic.

“We have always wanted the Chilean government to support us economically as well as all those who have supported.

They have abandoned us, ”Óscar Peralta, a beekeeper from the Colina commune, told Chilevisión.

Specifically, beekeepers ask the State for financing for their boxes, greater control of the funds and protection measures against the advance of the drought and the reduction of the ecosystems necessary for pollination.

Commander Gerardo Aravena, sub-prefect of the Central Santiago Prefecture, reported that “after talking with these people and making them see that it was not the correct way to demonstrate in pursuit of the cause, which is very valid for the rest, they were ordered to dismiss the attitude, to raise the bee panels and to leave the place ”.

“By ignoring and continuing with this situation of public health risk, Carabineros, through public order personnel, proceeded to arrest four beekeepers, three of legal age and one minor, who were transferred to the first police station, ”explained Aravena.
