42 children received a higher concentration of the vaccine than recommended.

Hanover - The Standing Vaccination Commission (Stiko) updated its Covid-19 vaccination recommendation for children aged 5 to 11 * at the beginning of December.

Accordingly, vaccination against corona is recommended for children with pre-existing conditions, and children without pre-existing conditions can also be vaccinated if they so wish.

However, a lower dose of the vaccine against Corona * is provided for children.

There has now been a breakdown in this regard in a vaccination center in Hanover.

Numerous children have received a corona vaccination with the higher concentration for adults.

As the Hanover region announced, the breakdown happened on Monday (03.01.2022) in the vaccination center at the zoo in Hanover. 42 children are said to have received the vaccine with the higher concentration for adults. The vaccine for five to eleven year olds was actually intended for them. According to media reports, however, the boys and girls received three times the dose of Biontech's vaccine, which is intended for this age group.

However, no serious consequences are to be expected from the mix-up.

"From a medical point of view, it is an unnecessary increased dose of the vaccine, which should not have a negative effect," said the senior specialist at the health department, Marlene Graf.

According to the health department, possible side effects are limited to pain at the injection site and fever reactions.

Corona vaccination pan in Hanover: Processes should be checked

Hanover's regional president Steffen Krach (SPD) wants to check the processes again in the future: "Even if no serious health consequences are to be expected, something like this shouldn't have happened." The Hanover region wants to analyze immediately how this error could have come about.

"This must not be repeated under any circumstances," said Krach, who apologized to the families concerned.

All parents of the children concerned had been informed directly by the regional administration by phone and email, it said on Monday (January 3rd, 2022).

Various medical advice services have been set up for them.
