In January 2022, eight to nine times more contagions are needed to achieve occupancy rates in Spanish hospitals comparable to those of January 2021. The figure sums up the double characteristic of the current wave of Covid, the sixth that is falling over Spain. With 2,296 cases per 100,000 inhabitants over the last fourteen days, the surge largely beats the incidence rate of the fourth wave (272), a year ago. But, at the same time, thanks to vaccination and reduced risk of severe cases with Omicron, the explosion of cases does not mean a commensurate increase in hospitalizations or admissions to intensive care units. On January 4, 2021, 11% of hospital beds were occupied by Covid patients, they are 10% today.
