Dell XPS 13 Plus reinvents our favorite Windows laptop at CES 2022

2022-01-04T22:01:14.117Z

It is the first XPS 13 model to use the new 12th generation Intel Core processor, which will give it better performance and power.

The Dell XPS 13 laptop was voted our favorite with Windows to the point that it became difficult to imagine how this near-perfect laptop could be improved upon.

Maybe that's why the company decided to reinvent it.

Meet the Dell XPS 13 Plus - a new laptop that revamps the long-lasting XPS design while making some promising changes.

We got to spend some time with this amazing new member of the XPS family, and we're impressed so far, but not without some concerns.

Dell's new laptop will hit the market in the spring with a starting price of $ 1,119, but here are a few things to expose.

A striking new look

The XPS 13 Plus immediately caught our eye with its completely redesigned interior, sporting a cleaner, more minimal look that somehow makes the standard XPS 13 (

MX $ 22,362 and

USD $ 799;

on Amazon) looks dated.

The keyboard is now truly edge-to-edge, with larger keys that don't have any gaps between them.

The function keys disappeared in favor of a series of LED icons that you will tap when you need to change the volume or brightness.

Fortunately, these somewhat bold design changes don't interrupt the experience of actually using the XPS 13 Plus, at least in our limited time with it.

The keyboard feels as snappy as you'd expect from any XPS machine, and we appreciate how much bigger the keys are this time around.

Scrolling and clicking felt quite natural, even though there was no visible border for where the touchpad begins and ends.

We are more in conflict with the row of functions.

The capacitive touch controls seemed responsive enough, but we still preferred the click of a physical key, something that made a big difference on the new 14-inch or 16-inch MacBook Pros that eventually ditched the Touch Bar. And while Apple's Touch Bar was At least customizable, the lighting function controls on the XPS 13 Plus appear to be fixed in place, simply switching between the "F" keys and the media controls when you hold down the function button.

Classic XPS 13 Features, Now With More Power

The revamped interior aside, the XPS 13 Plus looks a lot like an XPS, and that's a very good thing. Dell's flagship laptop is very travel-friendly at just 0.6 inches thick and 2.73 pounds, and it looks sleek in both Platinum and Graphite. The notebook's near-borderless InfinityEdge display looks just as seamless as it did on the latest XPS 13, though Dell says it removed some layers from the screen for lighter weight and better clarity.

The XPS 13 Plus also has hidden trigger speakers under the keyboard now, which we hope to put to the test with our favorite music and movies.

Unfortunately, the XPS 13's slim port selection doesn't seem to be getting any better for the Plus model - there are still only two Thunderbolt 4 ports here, and the older generation microSD card slot is gone.

This last part may not be important to everyone, but it's safe to say that you'll probably be looking for a USB-C hub (

MX $ 369 and

USD $ 39.99;

on Amazon) if you wear a lot of accessories.

In addition to sporting a new design, the XPS 13 Plus appears to be one of the most powerful Dell laptops to date.

It is the first XPS 13 model to feature the new 12th generation Intel Core processors, which promise a remarkable increase in performance and battery life.

The XPS 13 was already impressive on both fronts with the older 11th gen processors, so we're eager to see how the increase in power will help the XPS 13 Plus take on newer rivals like the 14-inch MacBook Pro.

Dell also says that the XPS 13 Plus has larger fans that will allow for 55% better airflow (great for really working on your lap) and an Express Charge 2.0 feature that will allow you to squeeze the laptop up to 80% in less than a minute. hour.

Let's recap

It's hard to improve on a laptop like the Dell XPS 13 (

MX $ 22,362 and

USD $ 799;

on Amazon), but we're excited about Dell's journey with the XPS 13 Plus.

Its larger keyboard is a stylistic and practical upgrade, and its more minimal design looks great.

It's as light and thin as you'd expect from an XPS, although we wish the port selection didn't stay as slim.

Still, we're eager to try the XPS 13 Plus's revamped design, more powerful processors, and improved speakers to see if it can land on our list of the best laptops when it arrives this spring for a starting price of $ 1,199.
