Five countries joined the temporary membership of the UN Security Council: Albania, Brazil, Gabon, Ghana and the United Arab Emirates, according to elections held at the United Nations last June.
Albania joins the council for the first time, while this is the eleventh time for Brazil and the third time for Gabon and Ghana, while the UAE occupied its membership once, according to what the Sputnik website reported.
It is noteworthy that Estonia, Niger, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Tunisia and Vietnam ended their temporary membership in the council last Friday.
The 15-member council is the highest body of the United Nations, in which Russia, the United States, China, France and the United Kingdom have permanent members on the council, each with veto power.
The other non-permanent members are elected by the 193-member General Assembly for staggered two-year terms allotted to global regions.
