Today, the World Health Organization called for the importance of doing more to help all countries receive coronavirus vaccines as quickly as possible in light of the continuing emergence of the omicron variant worldwide.

And the United Nations News Center quoted Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, head of the technical team on Covid 19, as saying in a letter to the organization that countries cannot make their way to get rid of the pandemic at a time when the omicron variable has been transmitted “intensively”, just as the delta variable does, adding that “in the context of Intense social mixing and limited adherence to proven public health measures in the context of limited worldwide vaccination coverage. These are the conditions that allow any variant of any virus to spread, and omicron exploits this situation as well as delta.”

In turn, the epidemiologist at the World Health Organization, Dr. Abdi Mahmoud, indicated that 128 countries reported the omicron variant before the holiday period, indicating that there is not enough data available so far to determine whether the omicron variant is less severe than other coronavirus strains.

Mahmoud pointed out that the city of London, which was severely affected by the high number of infections with the Covid 19 virus, is now witnessing lower rates of hospitalization by about 20% than it was in 2020 before the availability of vaccines.

Mahmoud called for the necessity of vaccination and said: “If you receive the vaccination, you are protected, but if you are at risk or did not receive the vaccination, Omicron, no matter how mild it is for others, may affect you severely, so vaccination is very important.”
