The Rottacher Bergwacht experienced a busy turn of the year.

With the help of a drone, a stray hiker from Weilheim was found during the night.

At 1:36 a.m., the mountain rescue drone, equipped with a thermal imaging camera, located a man in the dense mountain forest who waved desperately to draw attention to himself.

It was the end of a search that had held a team of around 70 people on the night from Thursday to Friday.

A helicopter illuminated the spot with headlights, and a little later a rescue team from the mountain rescue team reached the hypothermic man on foot.

It was a 36-year-old from Weilheim, who got lost in the area.

The team and an ambulance took care of the hiker, who was then taken to the hospital.

At 3:30 a.m., says mountain rescue service spokesman Alexander Stern, the operation was over on New Year's Eve.

Tegernsee Valley: Hikers get lost - hut landlord sounds the alarm

The rescue operation began with a missing person report on Thursday evening at 10:26 p.m.

The hut keeper of the Bodenschneidhaus and the Weilheimer's father had alerted the mountain rescue service after the 36-year-old had not appeared at a meeting point agreed with the landlord by 10 p.m.

Originally, the hiker had planned to climb the Bodenschneid over the Tegernsee side and then spend the night on the Bodenschneid house.

But on the descent from the summit, the man got lost in the area.

After it became clear that he would not be at the hut at 7 p.m. as planned, he reported to the hut keeper.

A new meeting point was set, but the man did not show up either.

He could no longer be reached on his cell phone.

The rescuers only knew that the Weilheimer had descended in the direction of Enterrottach.

The chief of operations triggered the rescue chain.

In addition to the Rottacher Bergwacht, the neighboring teams of Hausham, Schliersee and Munich - the latter was fortunately in their service hut in the Sutten area -, the Hausham technical team with special drones, a police helicopter from Munich, avalanche dogs, the mountain rescue ambulance, the Rottach fire brigade, the police Bad Wiessee and the Alpine Police Task Force.

The search from the air led to success after grueling hours.

In between the helicopter had to be refueled in Bad Tölz.

"Everyone was pretty exhausted after the action," says mountain rescue spokesman Stern.

Many missions on New Year's Eve: next search on Wallberg

The next job followed just a few hours later, also on New Year's Eve.

A Tegernsee vacationer, in her mid-50s, got lost while hiking on the Wallberg.

Eight members of the Rottacher Bergwacht went to look for it at 4:23 p.m.

“The woman was able to describe her location quite well on her cell phone,” reports Stern.

A police helicopter illuminated the spot, and a rescue helicopter with a winch enabled the mountain rescue service to get the woman off the site.

She was flown to the Rottach-Egern rescue station with slight hypothermia.

The husband picked her up from there.

The two helicopters then flew into the neighboring valley to help the Schliersee Mountain Rescue Service rescue two uninjured hikers who had climbed up on the top of the Brecher
