Mexico registers record of refugee applications in 2021

According to the Mexican government, the number of applications increased by 86.84% compared to 2019. The majority are from Haiti and Honduras.

The head of the Mexican Commission for Aid to Refugees in Mexico (Comar), Andrés Ramírez, reported this Monday that last year the country registered a record number of refugee applications.

"At the end of 2021, the number of applicants for refugee status in Mexico closed at 131,448, a figure that exceeds the historical mark of 2019 by 86.84%," Ramírez wrote on his Twitter account.

In another publication, the official detailed that in 2021 the applicants came mainly from: Haiti (51,857), Honduras (36,361), Cuba (8,319), Chile (6,970), Venezuela (6,223) and El Salvador (6,037).

He added that, in the case of Chileans, these are the children of Haitians.
