Nursing courses are very popular in recent years, with a large number of applicants and fierce competition.

From time to time, friends will ask about the structure and ranks of nurses in public hospitals.

Let’s talk about history. Before the establishment of the Hospital Authority in the 1980s, public hospitals had a very simple nurse structure. They were divided into enrolled nurses, registered nurses, head nurses, and senior head nurses. The chief nurse in the hospital was the chief nurse.

Back then, it would be a very small number of people who were finally able to be promoted to senior head nurse.

In the early 1990s, the Hospital Authority established and implemented New Management Initiatives. The ranks of ward manager, department operation manager and general nursing manager began to appear in the structure.

With the continuous development of the nursing profession, it is an indisputable fact that nurses are becoming more and more professional.

Later, the title of the traditional Nursing Officer was also replaced by the Advanced Practice Nurse, marking the importance of the advanced nursing profession.

In 2008, the Hospital Authority established the rank of Nurse Consultant to actively train clinical nursing experts to cope with the general trend of service development.

Specially trained nurses will take care of the needs of patients with the latest clinical nursing knowledge.

Gradually, the nurse structure is divided into two development directions, one is management, including ward managers and department operations managers, and the other is clinical, such as consultant nurses.

We are very clear that the evolution of clinical treatment knowledge will not stop, and the pace of learning by nurse colleagues must also be closely followed.

Last year, the Nursing Council also launched the "Voluntary Recognition Scheme for Specialist Nurses" to lay the foundation for specialist registration and professional development of nurses.

In response to this situation, public hospitals have recently strengthened the nurse promotion structure and added the Associate Nurse Consultant (Associate Nurse Consultant) rank to give nurses who wish to develop in clinical nursing an additional choice and increase opportunities for upward mobility.

In addition to meeting the needs of nursing professional development, it can also prepare sufficient talents for public medical services, and hope to help retain staff.

Nurses who have received specialist training will take care of the needs of patients with their professional clinical nursing knowledge.

In the future, public hospital nursing services will still face many challenges. As the management, it is the responsibility to lead colleagues to overcome these challenges one by one, and to work together to create a bright future. I use this article to encourage my colleagues.
