Palestinian Authority government spokesman Ibrahim al-Malahem said today (Tuesday) that vigorous international and regional talks are underway for the release of Hisham Abu Wahhash, a security detainee identified with Islamic Jihad and starving for more than 141 days in protest of his administrative detention.
At the same time, knowledgeable Palestinian sources told Al-Quds newspaper that those conducting the contacts were senior Egyptian intelligence officials.
The report states that mediation is underway between Israel and Islamic Jihad and other elements, in order to end the issue.
Sources told the Palestinian newspaper that the Egyptians aspire to reach an agreement under which the administrative detention of detainee Abu Hawash will end, and prevent its renewal.
According to sources, Egypt is striving to reach an interim compromise, under which the security detainee will be released on February 26.
As of today, he is due to be released only in April.
Although in the past it was decided to extend his detention.
Sources indicated that the efforts may lead to an agreement in the coming hours or days.
It was further stated that the decision whether to accept the compromise will be in the hands of the detainee himself and not in the hands of anyone else, despite his organizational affiliation with Islamic Jihad.
It was also reported in the Palestinian newspaper that Egypt fears that the issue of the security detainee could lead to a new round of fighting in the Gaza Strip, which will affect attempts to reach a truce agreement between Israel and Hamas.
The verdict that rejected his petition for release or a detention freeze in December stated that the ruling was decided on the basis of "confidential intelligence information in his case."
Abu Wahash was arrested on October 29, 2020 and is being questioned by police on suspicion of membership and activity in a hostile organization, harming the security of the area and planning to carry out military activity.
However, Abu Hashwash denied what was attributed to him.
It was further stated that in light of the confidential information in his case and in the absence of the possibility of prosecuting him criminally, the military commander decided on his administrative detention, which was extended from time to time, until April 26, 2022.
