At least 28,395 illegal immigrants crossed last year from France to England on small boats that took them across the English Channel on a perilous journey, a record number nearly three times the number recorded in 2020, the British news agency (PA) reported.
The agency quoted data from the British Home Office as saying that last November alone recorded the arrival of nearly 6,900 irregular migrants to the English coast, including 1185 people who arrived in one day, which is a record number.
In 2020, the number of illegal immigrants who crossed the canal was about 8,400.
And the number of migrants trying to leave France to reach Britain by sea has increased sharply since the French authorities in 2018 tightened inspection procedures in both the port of Calais and (Eurotunnel), the tunnel that connects the two banks of the Channel, two facilities that migrants used to cross hiding in vehicles.
Last November witnessed the sinking of 27 migrants who were on a rubber boat in the English Channel, in the worst migration tragedy in this waterway.
