The Russian Emergencies Ministry announced today that the crew of a cargo ship in the Sea of ​​Okhotsk issued a distress call due to the ice forming to the point of threatening the hull of the ship.

"As a result of the threat posed by the ice and the damage it may inflict on the hull of the cargo ship Grigory Luvtsov, the eight-person crew of the ship issued a call for immediate evacuation," the Russian TASS news agency quoted the ministry's press office as saying.

The office indicated that the ship is currently located in the Sea of ​​Okhotsk near the Shantar Islands in the Khabarovsk region, about 20 kilometers from the coast.

The office indicated that it is planned to send a rescue helicopter equipped with all the necessary equipment to provide assistance to the crew.
