The Russian Emergencies Ministry announced today that the crew of a cargo ship in the Sea of Okhotsk issued a distress call due to the ice forming to the point of threatening the hull of the ship.
"As a result of the threat posed by the ice and the damage it may inflict on the hull of the cargo ship Grigory Luvtsov, the eight-person crew of the ship issued a call for immediate evacuation," the Russian TASS news agency quoted the ministry's press office as saying.
The office indicated that the ship is currently located in the Sea of Okhotsk near the Shantar Islands in the Khabarovsk region, about 20 kilometers from the coast.
The office indicated that it is planned to send a rescue helicopter equipped with all the necessary equipment to provide assistance to the crew.
