Deciphering paintings is a fascinating and relevant topic for children, teens and even adults. Through the paintings one can learn about the painter many details, including the self-image, aspirations, needs and traumas of the past. For children who have difficulty explaining what they feel in words, it is a founding tool that helps us understand what the child is going through, what employs him and sometimes also find solutions in drawing that will help him deal with his problems.

Professional painting decoding is done by cross-referencing a variety of parameters such as line strength, thickness, shapes, sizes, proportions and also the choice of colors that dominate the painting and by what means he chose to paint. Here are some interesting anecdotes you can check out in your drawings and those of your children:

First it is recommended that in every home, long before children are absorbed in school, there will be an inviting corner for creation, a small table and chairs, while on the table it is important to have a variety of drawing means: thick and thin pencils, colored pencils, markers, panda and occasionally gouache. The intention is to create a corner where the child will enjoy drawing, playing with plasticine / dough and other creative means.

It is important to note that the child's choice (especially if it is consistent) in a particular medium as a tool for drawing, has great significance. In general, the following can be said:

Pencils -

Drawing in pencils is less binding, it can be easily erased. A child who chooses to draw in pencil may be a perfectionist, afraid to make mistakes, and sometimes the choice will indicate that he is facing difficulties around self-image.

Colored pencils -

Similar to the choice to draw with pencils, the choice to draw with colored pencils also characterizes children who are afraid to make mistakes, but at the same time are more open to exploring and experimenting.

Markers -

Since markers are not a flexible means of drawing, for example it does not allow to mix colors, children who choose to draw with markers will often teach us that they need to be accurate and in control.

Soft colors (panda / pastel) -

colors are a flexible means of painting that allows creativity.

You can mix colors and create new colors and shades.

Children who choose colors have less need for control, order and organization - and more need for movement.

Gouache -

less relevant in the context of deciphering drawings, and it is still important to allow children access to it because it allows for sensory experience and release, especially in children with difficulties on the background of sensory regulation.

The meaning of colors

Along with the meaning of choosing the means of painting, there is also the importance of choosing the colors in the painting, meaning especially when there is a color that is dominant and dominant in the painting. Of course a character or difficulty of a child cannot be analyzed on the basis of a single drawing in the context of choosing the color that dominates the drawing. A minimum of 15 drawings containing a certain color must be accumulated in order to draw conclusions.

Colors have diverse social and cultural connotations. This is a non-verbal way of conveying messages. They evoke in us different feelings and emotions and at the same time, it is important to neutralize these associations when approaching deciphering a painting, because in fact there is no good or bad color - they represent a message or feeling of the painter.

Black and red -

These are two colors that worry parents who come to me.

Although in our adult connotation, black is perceived as a bad, difficult and anchored color in a variety of expressions such as "black day" - unlike most of our associations, it does not mean a feeling of depression or sadness.

The color black can indicate a desire and need to be at the center, determination and leadership, and on the other hand can indicate a fear of criticism and demands that are too high.

The color red, like black, can indicate the desire and need of the painter to be at the center or enthusiasm.

On the other hand, choosing the color red can also imply to us a tendency to impulsivity and aggression.

Yellow -

Choosing the color yellow can indicate a sense of optimism, joy and renewal - and on the other hand can hint at a sense of identification that overwhelms and difficulty dealing with the pain of a close person.

Green -

Choosing this color as the dominant color in the paintings indicates a sense of growth, flowering and development.

At the same time, using this color can indicate a fear of growing up and succeeding, a health issue that is troubling or an expression of jealousy and narrow-mindedness similar to the phrase "green with envy".

Blue -

Choosing this color can teach us that the painter is in a stage of learning and construction, and he needs order, accuracy and organization.

On the other hand, the choice of color indicates too rational thinking, a fear that paralyzes progress.

As you have seen, the choice of means of painting and colors can tell a lot about our children, but it is not worth jumping to reckless conclusions.

In the event of repeated choices of tools or colors that raise the suspicion that something is wrong, a child-friendly counseling should be sought.
