Two children were killed and thousands of residents were evacuated as a result of massive floods on the island of Sumatra, the westernmost island of the main Indonesian islands.
Heavy rains in the north of the Indonesian island since last Friday caused rivers to overflow and raised water levels to three meters in residential areas, killing two children and evacuating thousands of people, the local disaster management told AFP.
The rainy season is usually accompanied by landslides and floods in Indonesia and also in Malaysia, which is trying to recover from the exceptional floods that witnessed last month and caused the death of about 50 people.
These disasters are reinforced by deforestation and a lack of risk prevention, according to environmentalists.
