The sculptors Muayyad Al-Awwad and Maram Al-Homsi from Daraa Governorate returned to their sculptural work after a ten-year hiatus, presenting new works that decorated the airport garden in Daraa.

Al-Awwad presented two sculptures, “Horan” and “Al-Haneen.” As for Al-Homsi’s work, it was titled “Motherhood.” These works were implemented with the support of the United Nations Development Program “UNDP” within the project to strengthen community cohesion.

The sculptor Al-Awwad indicated in a statement to SANA reporter that he is voluntarily participating in the project to enhance community cohesion with the aim of beautifying the garden and bringing life back to it and to be an outlet for the people of the neighborhood in an aesthetic atmosphere.

Al-Awwad named his sculpture Gurano, meaning Horan, in the Assyrian language, embodying the Houran mirror and some symbols and heritage houses, indicating that the sculpture was made of basalt stone, which embodies the environment and nature of the region. The sculptor is responsible for creating mass, emptiness and movement.

The second sculpture for Awwad “Al-Haneen” was made of white Hourani stone, which differs in its properties from basalt in terms of softness, hardness and lack of homogeneity, explaining that nostalgia means the beautiful days and moments that we lived in previous years, as he tried to embody them in the form of two horses’ heads, close together in a beautiful way.

The artist Al-Homsi confirmed that sculpture is not a monopoly of men, and that women can keep up with it in this field. Hence, the sculpture of motherhood sits next to the Awwad sculptures in the middle of the airport garden.

Al-Homsi said: “I love sculpting and participate in works within a teamwork to add aesthetics to the sculpture, and the opportunity was right for me with the project to enhance community cohesion within the Khadlak Nafs project in the airport park, which added new things to my knowledge and study of sculpture.”

The sculpture of motherhood, according to Al-Homsi, was embodied on a white stone in a mixture of dialogue and marble, to tell through it about motherhood and the mother’s embrace of her two children, with symbols of tenderness and childhood such as a bird and a gazelle, indicating that the white rock is a sign of motherhood with its giving and purity.

It is noteworthy that the artist Muayyad Al-Awwad is a graduate of the Faculty of Fine Arts, specializing in sculpture, and Maram Al-Homsi is a graduate of the Institute of Applied Arts, Department of Ceramics.
