Alsace: the Heritage Foundation launches a subscription for the See d'Urbès peat bog

For the first time, a French natural site will benefit from a call for contributions from the Heritage Foundation to citizens.

"This call for contributions is a first for a natural place in France", explains Claude Mongars, delegate for natural heritage at the Fondation du patrimoine en Alsace.

The See lake bog in Urbès (Haut-Rhin) is indeed one of the sites selected by the organization headed by Stéphane Bern.

"Usually, our missions focus on the architectural heritage but we have decided to extend it to safeguard our biodiversity and our nature", continues Claude Mongars.

Twenty-five thousand euros of private funds will be allocated by the Heritage Foundation to the Conservatory of natural spaces in Alsace.

The site manager wants to enhance this wetland, polluted by woody species (plant which has stems having the nature or consistency of wood).

A thousand-year-old site considered a sensitive natural place

“You have to pull up plants like alders and buckthorns which are drying up the bog.

The risk is that some animals will eventually disappear, like the many birds that have taken up residence there, ”warns the delegate to the Heritage Foundation.

All the more so as the See d'Urbès peat bog is a remarkable site since it is millennial and formed following the melting of the glacier at the Col de Bussang.

A place classified Natura 2000, therefore considered as a sensitive natural place.

“Our partner Primagaz will participate in the work up to 25,000 euros, but we are launching a citizen subscription to collect an additional 4,000 euros now by mail and from March 22 as part of an online contribution.

This amount is minor compared to the entire envelope, but it is important that the French can also contribute to the preservation of their natural spaces, ”insists Claude Mongars.

The work of uprooting woody species will begin in 2022 and will last until 2025 at the rate of three weeks each summer.

If you wish to make a donation, you can send it to Fondation du patrimoine - Délégation Alsace, 9, place Kléber, 67000 Strasbourg (03.88.22.32.15).
