How many vaccinations against Covid-19 still await us cannot really be foreseen at the moment.

The number could, however, also depend on the vaccine combination chosen.

But which one is really effective?

Munich - In Germany * as in numerous other countries, citizens are faced with an important choice: Which vaccine do you want for the booster prick?

It may be worth taking a look at Great Britain *, because the local Ministry of Health took a very close look at which combinations offer particularly high protection against severe Covid-19 courses and maintain this for a long time.

The focus is of course on the Omikron variant, first discovered in South Africa, which is already prevalent in many parts of the world and is also gaining dominance in the Federal Republic of Germany.

Booster effectiveness: Protection against Omikron generally lower than against Delta

The period between November 27 and December 17, 2021 was taken into account.

If those affected were recently outside the UK, they were ignored - this was to avoid incorrect results.

Based on the current state of research, clear distinctions can be drawn between omicron and delta cases.

The former was found in 68,489 of the people considered, the latter in 147,597.

In general, it was found that the protection against Omikron * was lower than that against Delta in all combinations.

Effective booster: Moderna (back) and Biontech apparently provide a high level of protection against Omikron.

After two doses of Astrazeneca: which booster offers the best protection?

If a person received two doses

of Astrazeneca

*, the effectiveness was 35 percent after five to nine weeks, and after ten to 14 weeks it was only 25 percent.

A booster with Biontech * increased protection to 50 percent one week after administration, and even to 60 percent after two to four weeks.

Five to nine weeks after the prick, it's a good 50 percent.

With Moderna * the values were slightly higher in the first four weeks, but slightly lower from week five.

After two doses of Biontech: which booster offers the best protection?

If a person initially received two doses

of Biontech

, the protection was 60 percent after two to four weeks, and after ten to 14 weeks it was still around 30 percent.

A Biontech booster made the effectiveness jump to 70 percent a week later, even ten weeks later it was still almost 50 percent.

However, the best values were provided by a refresher with Moderna: after a week the protection was almost 80 percent, after two to four weeks it was still 70 percent, before it even increased slightly again.

After two doses of Moderna: which booster offers the best protection?

In the case of two doses of

Moderna

, the protection was 50 percent after two to four weeks, increased after five to nine weeks and was still over 30 percent after ten to 14 weeks.

However, there was no reliable data on the effectiveness of the booster vaccination because not enough cases could be identified.

So three vaccinations with mRNA vaccines seem to offer better protection than a vector vaccine as the basis and an mRNA preparation on top.

However, the Ministry of Health points out that the results should be treated with caution - because of the small number of cases examined and the fact that travelers were not included.

It also says that in England on December 19, 2021, 68.2 percent of citizens had already received a vaccine dose, 62.2 percent had been pricked twice, and 38.9 percent of people had been given at least three doses.

Using antibody tests on blood donors, it was discovered that 98.4 percent of the population had built up antibodies, 22.7 percent from an infection alone.
