Food and drink ban on trains and planes: what will change for our next trips

2022-01-05T14:55:18.381Z

Since January 3, catering services have been suspended on board TGVs and domestic flights, in order to slow the progression of the Covid-19. The ban on eating will be applied "with common sense and discernment," says SNCF.

Eat your sandwich, nibble on a few cookies, drink a coffee ... These harmless gestures are no longer allowed on trains and certain planes.

"

The consumption of drinks and food will be prohibited in [...] public transport, including long distance

," announced Prime Minister Jean Castex on December 27.

This measure, justified by the progression of the Covid-19 epidemic in France, also concerns other places such as cinemas and sports arenas.

It applies from Monday January 3 and at least until Sunday January 23 inclusive.

No more bar cars on trains, “discernment” on long journeys

It is now necessary to make arrangements by having lunch or dinner before boarding the train. To enforce the obligation to wear a mask throughout the journey, the TGV bar car is closed for at least three weeks. “

On-board catering is suspended. The consumption of food and drink is no longer authorized on trains with two exceptions: drinking quickly to quench thirst is authorized; the feeding of fragile people is tolerated in case of necessity (elderly, sick, etc.)

”, details the SNCF on its site. It should be noted that the catering offer is maintained on Eurostar and Thalys which make international journeys.

“Common sense” and “discernment”, these are the principles that the railway company wants to apply, aware that the new measure could pose a problem on long journeys.

"

If you have an imperative need to eat and drink because you are fragile or simply because you have this physiological need, you can remove your mask and drink or eat quickly and put it back on immediately afterwards

", indicated the Minister of Transports, Jean-Baptiste Djebbari, this January 3 on BFMTV.

In airplanes, the ban only concerns domestic flights

If you have planned to travel by plane in Europe or elsewhere in the world, rest assured: the ban on eating and drinking will only apply to domestic flights.

Airlines will therefore continue to offer catering services on international flights.

Long-haul flights between the metropolis and the overseas territories are not affected by this ban.
