The health authorities in Hong Kong imposed new restrictions, including banning flights from eight countries, to limit the spread of the Corona virus in its territory.

"Flights from Australia, Canada, France, India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Britain and the United States have been banned from midnight next Friday and for two weeks," Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam told AFP today, stressing that passenger flights from those countries will not be allowed to land. It will also prevent passengers from boarding flights to Hong Kong.

This decision came after the cancellation of all major events and commercial activities and the closure of bars, nightclubs, gyms and beauty salons.

Health officials fear the highly contagious Omicron could spread to the community.

Hong Kong recorded 114 cases of omicron until yesterday evening, and the majority of injuries were detected at the airport or during a mandatory 21-day quarantine in hotels imposed on the majority of arriving passengers.

The Chinese authorities are seeking to implement the (zero Covid) strategy that has succeeded in keeping the number of infections low in all its provinces and cities, including Hong Kong.
