In Mali, first clashes between Wagner and jihadists

The signals of Wagner's presence in Mali are multiplying.

On Monday, men from this Russian private security company reportedly experienced a first serious clash with Islamist insurgents.

According to France 24, a convoy of the Malian Armed Forces (FAMa), accompanied by mercenaries, was attacked between Bandiagara and Bankass

two towns located south of Mopti, in the center of the country.

One of the armored vehicles was said to have jumped on an improvised explosive device (IED) before a violent exchange of gunfire broke out;

a classic jihadist ambush strategy.

The balance sheet is uncertain.

A member of Wagner was reportedly injured and taken to Sévaré hospital.

Katiba Macina is active in this region.

Led by Amadoun Koufa, a Fulani preacher, it is part of the Support Group for Islam and Muslims (GSIM), linked to al-Qaida.
