The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan, will receive a confidential sum from the Mail on Sunday for copyright infringement when her lengthy legal battle against the British tabloid comes to an end, court documents show.

The duchess took two separate lawsuits against the newspaper's editor: one for copyright infringement and the other for misuse of private information.

According to a court order issued on December 17 by the Court of Appeals heard by CNN this Wednesday, Associated Newspapers Limited, which publishes Mail on Sunday and Mail Online, must pay the Duchess a previously agreed confidential sum related to the claim of infringement of Copyright.

During last year's hearings on January 19-20 and May 5, the court found that the Associated Newspapers group infringed on Meghan's copyright by publishing excerpts from a handwritten letter she sent to her father in the The Mail on Sunday newspaper and the Mail Online website, says the court order.

The group will also pay the Duchess £ 1 (US $ 1.36) in nominal damages for the misuse of private information, according to the court order.

On December 2, the Court of Appeals upheld a ruling that found that the Associated Newspapers group had misused Meghan's private information in publishing the letter, saying that the Duchess "had a reasonable expectation of privacy in the content of the letter".

In a statement after the trial, Meghan praised it as a "victory not just for me, but for anyone who has ever been afraid to stand up for what is right."
