If all prejudices about the desert were correct, it would be hot, sandy and there would be no water.
A weather drama shows something completely different.
Riad - Sahara, Gobi or Rub al-Chali - deserts evoke certain ideas in us. It's always hot, there is hardly any water to drink and there is only sand everywhere. Of course, these assumptions are not entirely wrong, but a desert basically has a lot more to offer than you might think. And the following weather spectacle is not a mirage either.
Even if it can get sweltering during the day, the photos from Saudi Arabia are not fakes.
At night it can get bitterly cold and the temperature can drop below freezing point.
That means: snow.
Now a Middle East expert who has published many articles in the
Wall Street Journal
,
New York Times
,
Independent
or the
Guardian
has shared a video from Saudi Arabia that was very well received on Twitter.
Natural spectacle in Saudi Arabia: delicious tiramisu or just milk bars?
There you can see how a hand lifts the sand cover and reveals the snow hidden beneath it.
Many users marvel at the natural spectacle and make amusing comparisons about this weather phenomenon.
Some users felt reminded of two specific dishes.
Most immediately thought of tiramisu.
The delicious dessert is likely to have landed on many people's plates, especially between December 24th and New Year's.
Because while the video has almost 100,000 likes, the tiramisu comparison in the comments column already has almost 20,000.
Many also use the Milchschnitte as a comparison.
Why is the sand actually lying over the fallen snow?
Drifts whirl up the sand and cover parts of the snow again.
Weather peculiarity: Snow is not uncommon in Saudi Arabia either
As early as 2020, as the Weather Channel reported, the snow was filmed in Saudi Arabia.
In the northwest of the country, the snow line fell below 1,500 meters and the camels trudged through the icy heights.
Saudi Arabia:
Population: approx. 34 million
State / form of government: Absolute monarchy
Area: 2,149,690 km² (cf. Germany: 357,588 km²)
Head of State / Head of Government: Salman ibn Abd al-Aziz
A Twitter user, who describes himself as an author, showed a video from January 2, 2022 and proved that the snow did not detract from the good mood:
Shortly before Christmas, Germany hit a weather phenomenon, and everyone saw the result of a white Christmas Eve.
