Opinion | Just standing in the production: Bennett's loss of temper stems from his frustration with his position in government Israel today

2022-01-05T20:13:48.262Z

The prime minister may have started his term well with a victory over the Delta and a meeting with Biden, but then everything started to go awry • The chase for Netanyahu and the outburst against MK Struck, who was his secret wife, are frustrated that his partners do not really count him due to his limited power. As Prime Minister, Bennett should act accordingly

Achievements are beginning to erode - and nerves are rising:

Prime Minister Naftali Bennett's photos and videos have risen to pursue his predecessor in office and will burn forever as one of the low points of his public life.

So is the rudeness ("Fly away from my eyes") in which we waved off who was his secret wife for years, MK Orit Struck.

The loss of Bennett's sanity in the Knesset plenum reflected to everyone the accumulated frustration of his for several months.

This is at least possible to assess based on the developments and things he has said in various settings.

The Knesset Plenum during the vote on the Electricity Law,

The first four months of Bennett's tenure were quite successful.

He overcame the Delta, succeeded well in meeting with US President Joe Biden, Putin and the political arena in general. The complicated government he headed functioned - not a matter of course - and passed the state budget. Was perfect.

But then the breakdowns began.

The Corona Cabinet stopped obeying him.

His wife traveled abroad contrary to his opinion. Conflicts within his bureau leaked out and he was forced to swallow more and more left-handed frogs - the Electricity Act is just one example.

At the same time, it became clear that his government partners were not really counting him.

When Bennett spoke inside the room about the possibility of closure, Lieberman said publicly "there will not be and will not be," and his word stated.

Education Minister Shasha Bitton also allegedly lied to him and also thwarted the vaccination campaign he planned in the schools.

His main partner, Yair Lapid, somewhat forgot about him in the six-month video for the formation of the government.

Anyone watching the filmed summary can easily get the impression that Lapid is the one in charge and Bennett is only in the production.

There is of course the responsible adult without quotes from the government, Defense Minister Bnei Gantz.

Blue and white chairman, pursuing an independent foreign and security policy, which has traditionally been under the control of prime ministers. Ganz travels all over the world and meets heads of state, even though he is only defense minister. Bennett has no control over him.

Even the achievements that were starting to erode.

Biden has not spoken to him since August.

The historic visit to the Emirates did not really catch on, and to other countries it is impossible to travel because of the corona.

Then the omicron came and grabbed everything.

The man who wrote the book "How to beat an epidemic" admitted in closed conversations that he actually does not know how to do it.

To all this is added the political weakness.

After half a year in office he is still struggling for his political right to exist, clashing with the political camp from which he grew up, the same camp from which he came and to which he will no longer be able to return.

One can be sure that this place was not planned after six months.

It is the partners who control what happens.

Ministers Lieberman and Lapid,

To this impasse, political and functional, joins the inherent weakness of the role of the Prime Minister of Israel.

The public is usually unaware of this, but a prime minister - any prime minister - is actually one of the weakest ministers.

To all ministers the law confers executive powers.

The authority of the prime minister, on the other hand, is acquired by virtue of being "first among equals," and by virtue of his political power.

Only the Mossad, the GSS and a few other small arms are directly subordinate to it. All other government ministries, in stark contrast to what is happening in the United States, for example, are in spite of the ministers.

Levant has no authority to give instructions to the directors of the ministries.

The previous prime ministers overcame this hurdle through their political power - they headed the coalition's main party and therefore their party ministers, who were the majority in the government, were afraid to change their minds.

Only two ministers hang in Bennett, Ayelet Shaked and Matan Kahana from his right-wing party.

All the other 34 depend on Lapid, Lieberman, Saar, Ganz, Michaeli and Horowitz.

So while they are careful about Bennett's dignity, when it comes down to it - they have no reason to count him.

This drilling stew, one might at least assume, led to Bennett's loss of self-control this morning.

It is to be hoped for him and for us that from this low point he will only rise.

After all, he is the prime minister.

He should act accordingly.

Were we wrong?

Fixed!
