The Golden Globe, which I have always considered the funniest party of the year in Hollywood, will be reduced this Sunday to a small private event, without the presence of large guests, without a red carpet with celebrities and without the press can cover it as we always have.

Five days before the winners ceremony and through a statement, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) confirmed that its 79th edition will take place at the Beverly Hilton hotel, its traditional headquarters in Beverly Hills, at 6:00 pm (Los Angeles time) and without the presence of an audience, read famous.

Those who attend must have the complete vaccination schedule, a booster dose and the negative results of a covid-19 test.

  • Golden Globe 2022: the complete list of nominees for the 79th edition of the awards

While it is true that many of the celebrations scheduled for this month and that were related to the theme of the show have been postponed or canceled due to the increase in cases of covid-19, this is not the only reason why the Golden Globe It has basically come down to reading a list of winners.

In February 2021, an article in the Los Angeles Times uncovered old and new allegations against the HFPA, ranging from corruption to discriminatory practices.

The article specifically mentioned a lawsuit, which was later dismissed by a judge, by a journalist who wanted to be part of the association.

As a journalist who has covered the Golden Globe for so many years, I understand the advantageous position that my colleagues from the association have had within the industry in being precisely the organizers of these awards.

Their direct access to the stars of this city is something that not all of us enjoy, but again, it is they who long ago built that bridge that has always brought them closer to potential nominees.

The issue of the lack of diversity within the members of this association, whose number in February was estimated to be less than 90, is something that the Association has been working on over the months.

At that time, it was made up of Asian, European, African and Latin American members.

And in the official directory of that moment, I was able to corroborate that the majority of its members were women.

Today the group of members is growing (21 new journalists were welcomed in October), reforms have been adopted for the sake of greater transparency, a new board of directors was elected and one of the main complaints of almost a year ago about the absence of black members has been addressed and by the last quarter of last year there would already be six of these journalists.

Since the current Golden Globe nominations - led by "The Power of the Dog" and "Belfast" in the film categories and "Succession" on television - became known, the customary commercials where each studio proudly displayed these mentions , almost disappeared.

It's as if the Golden Globes no longer exist for Hollywood.

In fact, these announcements have replaced the name and prominence of the Globo with those of the Critics Choice Awards, a ceremony that has never generated as much attention as the first.

Why the Golden Globes might never be the same again

Last March, a letter signed by more than 100 public relations companies demanded that the HFPA make radical changes in order to put an end to its alleged practices of discriminatory behavior, lack of professionalism, ethical and financial deficiencies.

They indicated that as long as these changes did not occur, they were not going to allow their clients, that is, Hollywood talent, to give interviews or participate in Association events.

That has been almost ten months and despite the changes, this boycott seems to remain firm.

On the other side of the coin are the members of the Association who at the time fully complied with the requirements to be part of it, but who today have seen their work activity decrease precisely due to the lack of access to their sources.

This Sunday, according to the HFPA, all those institutions that through the decades have been the object of aid and donations from the Association in order to promote the arts and education will also be highlighted.

The effort to clean its image, in the face of an industry where secrecy can also define it, is evident.
