Sony's Bravia Cam: a webcam for your TV that tells you when you're sitting too close

2022-01-05T16:20:04.815Z

You can control image quality, sound and even turn off the TV through gestures that the Sony camera will detect.

In terms of unique gadgets from CES 2022, Sony could get the first round of applause with the Bravia Cam.

And while this TV accessory may look like a webcam on steroids, its feature set has some unique functions aimed at improving picture quality and making parenting easier.

Let's talk about this unique television accessory and share some insights from Tyler Ishida, Vice President, Consumer Business Group at Sony Electronics.

What exactly is the Bravia Cam?

The Bravia Cam is essentially a camera with microphones that will connect to the top of your Sony TV.

From now on, it works with all Bravia 2022 models, through OLED, Mini LED and LED, and using it will be as easy as connecting it to your TV.

Once installed and powered on, it can be used to control your TV with gestures, adjust picture or sound quality depending on where you're sitting, and turn off the TV to save power, among other features.

If you are concerned about privacy, there is a physical switch on the top of the Bravia Cam that will block your view of the lens.

Sony also confirmed that the data is processed locally and that you can delete all clips at any time.

Gesture controls take us back to the days of the Xbox's Kinect, Nintendo's Wii Remote, and even an LG smartphone.

But here they are simply meant to be an additional option that you can use or ignore.

It will be limited to basic controls like turning off the TV, changing the inputs or adjusting the volume as well.

If you have children at home, you may be happy to know that the Bravia Cam offers a message if it detects someone sitting too close to the TV.

It won't yell at your kids, but it will display a message asking them to back off.

You can also use the Bravia Cam as a webcam with Google Duo.

Although other services will not be supported initially, it can be used with other USB webcams such as the Logitech Brio (

MX $ 4,199 and

USD $ 159).

The Bravia Cam will also dim the TV when you walk away and can be set to turn off the TV after a certain period of time.

It's a small detail, but it could help reduce power consumption.

You can intelligently adjust the image quality

"I think Ambient Optimization Pro gets the most benefit from it," Ishida was quick to point out as the main reason for getting the Bravia Cam.

Essentially, depending on where you are in space, the Bravia Cam will use its Ambient Optimization Pro functionality to adjust the picture and sound settings.

This way, if you are on the right side of the TV, you can change the audio mix and adjust some picture parameters to get the best viewing angle.

It takes the built-in light and environmental sensors to the next level as it will adapt based on where you are watching TV.

The Bravia Cam will come with the premium Bravia 2022 Z9K or A95K TV.

Otherwise, you will need to buy it separately for a price not yet announced.

When asked, Ishida told us, "It will be competitively priced in the market," which makes us think it will be similar to premium webcams, for probably a couple hundred dollars.

Let's recap

It is clear that Bravia Cam is a complement to a Sony TV, but we are especially eager to see how this image optimization works in Sony's historically accurate and immersive viewing experience.

This seems to add a layer of customization down to the level of where you are in space.

We're also naming the Bravia Cam as a finalist for CES 2022's Most Innovative Home Entertainment Accessory. We'll share our full finalists later this week.

We can't wait to get down to business and fully review the Bravia Cam once it launches this spring alongside Sony's Bravia 2022 TVs.
