Those who are flashed have had to pay higher fines since November 2021.
But where are most of the speed cameras in Germany?
A city in North Rhine-Westphalia is surprisingly at the top.
Düsseldorf - A brief flash of red light and it happened.
A speed camera caught a speed sinner again.
A feeling that many motorists are sure to know.
And a violation that can be quite expensive - especially since the introduction of the new catalog of fines on November 9, 2021. With speed cameras alone, the largest cities in North Rhine-Westphalia take millions every year.
But where in Germany is there actually the most lightning in relation to the street area?
A new speed camera ranking crowns a surprising “winner”.
Speed camera: NRW city tops new ranking
Berlin, Munich, Hamburg or Cologne? No, Germany’s metropolises have to rank further behind in the speed camera ranking, evaluated by the Goldenstein law firm with the help of several speed camera apps. The basis for the ranking was the average number of fixed, mobile and semi-stationary speed cameras in the 40 largest German cities between December 3, 2021 and January 2, 2022. The firm then set these figures in relation to the respective street area of the cities. In this way, Goldenstein determined the cities in which, on average, the most speed cameras per 1000 hectares of road surface are located every day.
At the top in all of Germany: Wuppertal.
And even with a distance.
According to the evaluation, there are an average of 34 speed cameras per day and 1000 hectares of road surface in the metropolis in the Bergisches Land.
That is almost twelve more speed cameras than in the city in second place - Freiburg (Breisgau).
Speed camera ranking: The top 10 in Germany
place | city | Average speed camera per day and 1000 ha of road surface |
1 | Wuppertal | 34.0 |
2 | Freiburg (Breisgau) | 22.3 |
3 | Bonn | 21.6 |
4th | Stuttgart | 21.4 |
5 | Bremen | 20.9 |
6th | Wiesbaden | 20.8 |
7th | Karlsruhe | 20.3 |
8th | Aachen | 18.5 |
9 | Hanover | 17.8 |
10 | Bielefeld | 17.1 |
Ranking for Germany: Most speed cameras are in Cologne
In Wuppertal there are an average of 47.7 speed cameras per day. In terms of absolute numbers, this is not the highest value, but in relation to the street area of the individual cities, it is the best in Germany. By the way: Most speed cameras during the day are in Cologne. According to the Goldenstein law firm, the cathedral city has an average of 65.4 speed cameras per day. In relation to the street area, which is almost three times as large as in Wuppertal, it is only 12th place for Cologne in the ranking.
“Our analysis shows that, as expected, the largest number of speed cameras are set up in the largest German cities.
In terms of the road surface, however, Wuppertal is by far in first place in our ranking.
This is mainly due to the fact that in Wuppertal the second most fixed speed cameras were installed in Germany, although the city with 1,406 hectares of street area only ranks 25th of the 40 cities analyzed, ”explains lawyer Alexander Voigt from the Goldenstein law firm.
Other NRW cities in the top 10 are Bonn (3rd place), Aachen (8th place) and Bielefeld (10th place).
