Unvaccinated Latino couple dies of COVID-19 hours apart in California

They were married for 25 years and passed away on December 19. They were not vaccinated. "In a way this was an eye-opener for my family," said one of her relatives. "Anyone who is not yet vaccinated definitely should."

A Latino couple from Southern California died of COVID-19 the same day within hours of each other.

Álvaro and Sylvia Fernández, aged 44 and 42, died as a result of the disease caused by the coronavirus on December 19.

The couple met in their teens and were married for 25 years

“They were dating in high school.

They have been together since she was 15 years old, ”Salvador Fernández, Álvaro Fernández's brother, told NBC Los Angeles.

"One could not live without the other," he added.

Relatives told NBC Los Angeles, our sister affiliate of NBC News that

the couple was not vaccinated and Alvaro Fernandez had diabetes

.

Both tested positive for the coronavirus days before their death, according to the family.

Alma Hernández, Álvaro Fernández's sister, said that Sylvia Fernández was about to be vaccinated.

"[Álvaro Fernández] wanted to wait and investigate more" before receiving the injection, Hernández told NBC Los Angeles.

“He searched for information on Google.

He did not want to believe everything that was on the news, ”he

"In a way this opened my family's eyes that anyone who has not yet been vaccinated should definitely get vaccinated," said Hernández, who is fully inoculated, as well as his brother Salvador Fernández.

California has averaged 22,794 daily cases with a positivity rate of 20.4%, according to recent state data.

COVID-19 hospitalizations in the state increased by 8.2% in a single day.

In Latino-majority San Bernardino County, there have been a total of 401,938 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and a total of 6,056 confirmed deaths, according to state data.

"We have not been given enough evidence [for COVID-19], not sufficiently funded, and well told, and we have several decades of unresolved issues of social determinants of health," said Dr. Ilan Shapiro in a phone call with NBC News.

Shapiro is the medical director of health education for AltaMed, a Latino healthcare provider based in Southern California.

Other states with large numbers of Hispanic residents, such as New York and New Jersey, and the Puerto Rico Territory, are among those with the highest number of new COVID-19 cases.

For those who are not yet vaccinated, Shapiro recommended not relying on "a computer" for information about the vaccine,

but talking with a doctor or health professionals.

While the omicron variant is considered milder for those who are fully vaccinated and boosted, "that doesn't mean it's harmless," Shapiro explained.
