The mayor's office in Weßling is unrecognizable.

There is a modern high desk, bright cupboards, and a large touchscreen hangs on the wall, on which Mayor Michael Sturm (54) shows locations in the community.

A few hundred meters further, the new elementary school is growing up.

Big changes are heralded for the place, especially with regard to the traffic management in connection with the elementary school.

Mr. Sturm, how did the year go in your personal review?

It was pretty good, despite Corona.

We have moved many things.

Sure, a lot of things are not as far as I would like.

We made visible progress in designing the footpath around the lake.

We have prepared the green areas, nicely laid out paths, and renewed benches.

Unfortunately, the cycle lane on Gautinger Strasse fell by the wayside.

Unfortunately, the district office cannot yet process our applications for personal reasons.

What would you like to have achieved by the end of 2022?

I hope that we can make progress with the construction of the new primary school as planned.

It would be important to me that the traffic route concept is in place and that we in the administration have advanced digitization.

I want a lot more to be possible about the internet, from making appointments to hybrid meetings.

A new microphone system is also planned in order to better understand the councilors during meetings and to be able to hear the verbal contributions on the Internet during hybrid meetings.

A new website is already in progress and ordered.

As far as further construction work is concerned, I hope that we can make progress on the bottom of the boiler.

We want to tear down the old stock there and build eight to twelve social housing.

What is the traffic concept for elementary school?

We want to separate the flow of traffic, that would be the most important thing for the safety of school children.

In this context, we discussed the future of the underpass at the last meeting.

Opinions are still divided at the moment.

There is a variant that we renovate the bridge or build a new corrugated steel sheet underpass.

But these alternatives will be examined and then decided in the January meeting.

We don't have much time because we have to be ready by the opening of the primary school in September 2023/2024.

What will happen to the old school buildings in Oberpfaffenhofen and Weßling after moving to the new elementary school?

What we will do in the longer term has not yet been decided, but we are already working on proposed solutions.

It's easy with the two study rooms in the old fire station, which are handed over to the kindergarten or daycare center.

The old school building in Weßling is in need of renovation.

The question is whether it makes sense to accommodate clubs or other institutions there.

There are of course some inquiries.

A concept of temporary use probably makes the most sense, as has already been requested by the local council.

This saves us time and enables us to work out a good solution.

Is a demolition conceivable?

There are approaches in this direction.

But of course the building shapes the townscape, entire generations have gone to school there.

Opinions also vary widely on this.

How is the situation in Oberpfaffenhofen?

The topic is even more complex there because the municipality owns several pieces of land in this area with around 10,000 square meters in the center around the school.

For example, elderly-friendly living would be possible there.

In the long term, we would like to have a children's home in every district, so that is also an option.

The access areas are a bit difficult, but we are looking for workable solutions.

What kind of changes do the people of Weßling see on Hauptstrasse in the coming year?

The new residential and commercial buildings in the area of the Hotel Post will be ready in March.

As long as they are under construction, temporary arrangements will remain, the design of the square and the street between the station underpass and the Marian column will not be finished until 2023/2024.

It is a pity that there are still no plans and approaches for use on the other properties in the direction of the maypole.

The landowners have signaled this to us as before, and this also applies to their descendants.

At the train station, too, the community has been talking about the changes for a long time, and things seem to be slowly picking up speed.

How is the connection to the railway?

Oh, when it comes to the handicapped-accessible expansion from 2024, that's easier.

But when we talk about the building that owns the right wing of the railway and the rest of the community, nothing happens.

But I hope that we can finally buy the last part of the track in 2023/2024.

There are many ideas for the use of the station concourse and the building.

That is why we will be concerned with the topic of “station use” in 2022 as well.

This of course also applies to the relocation of the market square in the course of the station renovation.

There are various concepts for this, but none of them have yet to be finalized.

A bike park behind the cemetery has been under discussion since this year.

But the church is making slow progress.

Why?

The first ideas were presented to the local council a few months ago, and afterwards we wanted to discuss the possibilities with residents and users. Unfortunately, the residents have very great reservations about the project. Inquiries about points that have long been discussed and some of which have already been rejected keep coming back. That costs a lot of trust and damages cooperation. The youngsters are now driving with us in the woods and building their ramps there. But that is very dangerous. In the spring we had to get an injured person out of the forest with the fire brigade because the ambulance service couldn't get there. The problem is also: If there is such a park in the communal forest and we find out about it, we have to dismantle it for reasons of liability. It would be nice if we could make progress with the bike park in 2022 and find a good, joint solution.

In the past there was a lack of childcare places in Weßling.

How is it looking at the moment?

We have done a lot and now there are actually free places.

Nevertheless, we will set up a new kindergarten in the after-school care center in Hochstadt, and we are also planning a large day care facility with 20 places at the special airport in Oberpfaffenhofen.

Intensive discussions are currently taking place with the Voit family, the owners of Aero-Building GmbH.

Due to the new elementary school and the all-day offer that will then be possible, we assume that fewer children will register at the after-school care center in Hochstadt.

Therefore we are building the area into a kindergarten.

Will the pedestrian and cycle path underpass be built on the bypass in 2022?

I hope yes.

The plan is to draw up the contracts and then get started.

To what extent the State Building Authority has the capacity to support us is still unclear.

If necessary, we have to do this ourselves with planners.

That is not ideal, but I would like to move on there.

And the cycle path from Weßling to Steinebach-Wörthsee?

After long discussions, this everyday cycle route through the communities of Wörthsee, Seefeld and Weßling will be implemented next year.

The finish of the surface had raised questions, and some time ago there was a decision in the local council that we should not pave.

But if you take a closer look at this type of path, you will find that the gravel is so compacted that no more water seeps away, but only runs off to the side.

So it doesn't make a big difference anymore when it comes to sealing.

The only things that worry me are the heavy agricultural vehicles or the harvesters for woodworking.

Analyzes will show whether this works.

We are working closely with the Wörthsee community here, I am confident.

How is the mood in the local council?

The mood is good and we have pulled ourselves together.

The mix in the Council is good and I like the broad perspectives, even if you have a different opinion.

Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, there has not yet been a closed meeting.

We intercepted this through a large number of meetings so that all councils are on the same page.

At the beginning of your tenure, as an entrepreneur, you are often desperate because of the bureaucracy.

How does it look today?

It got better.

I have adapted and don't get so upset anymore.

We changed the structures in the administration and there was a rethink in the direction of trying things out.

This speeds up a lot and creates ideas for new solutions.

However, it is frustrating that we have been pushing a mountain of work ahead of us due to the long-term understaffing in the building department.

Therefore, we can only edit or complete a certain part of the many open development plans.
