Today, the Ministry of Information and the Syrian Commission for Family and Population Affairs launched the “Don’t Be Silent” campaign to raise awareness of issues of violence, especially domestic violence, to educate battered women about their rights guaranteed by law, and the services available to them in the Commission’s Family Protection Unit, and to educate the community about the need to combat violence against women and to report any such case.

The launch of the campaign comes after the death of “Ayat al-Rifai” was recorded as a result of being subjected to violence by her husband and his family, which received great interaction from the Syrian community, which demanded punishment for the abusers.

In a dialogue seminar organized today in the Reda Saeed Conference Hall at the University of Damascus to launch the campaign, the head of the Syrian Commission for Family and Population Affairs, Samar al-Sibai, indicated that there are many cases similar to the case of Ayat in society. to raise awareness about it.

Al-Sibai stated that violence increased during the years of the war in all its forms, indicating that most of the cases that the commission deals with are reported by the local community, and it has allocated a phone number 0951444190 to communicate about any case of domestic violence, knowing that all reports are confidential.

According to Al-Sibai, within the Family Protection Unit, the commission provides psychological, social and legal support to survivors of violence and vocational education courses so that they can work and secure a source of livelihood for them.

From the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Yasser Kelzy explained that the police department is the first to resort to the abuser, and for this purpose, the ministry has rehabilitated officers in coordination with the Syrian Family Planning Authority and the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor to deal with violent cases.

In turn, the head of the Judicial Experience Office and a member of the Legislation Department in the Ministry of Justice, Judge Ammar Bilal, stated that Syrian laws are advanced in terms of protecting the family and giving custody to the mother.

In a statement to SANA, the Director of Population at the Syrian Commission for Family and Population Affairs Elham Safi explained that the main objective of the “Don’t Silence” campaign is to introduce and raise awareness of issues of violence, especially domestic violence, and it is in response to the case of Ayat al-Rifai, to confirm the existence of governmental and civil bodies that support battered women with multiple laws and programs, noting that these bodies do not You can move and reach victims of violence unless a case of violence is reported, either by the survivor or the community.

Safi stated that the campaign includes awareness activities targeting various segments of society, while continuing to provide services through the Family Protection Unit.

The symposium was attended by Minister of Information, Dr. Boutros Al-Hallaq, Deputy Minister Ahmed Dawa and President of the National Union of Syrian Students Dareen Suleiman.
