The removal of the paint has proven to be problematic: That is why the smeared lion statue on the Starnberg Promenade remains colorful for the time being.
Starnberg - The large lion statue on the southern Starnberg lake promenade will remain colorful for a while.
The restoration turns out to be difficult - but at least it has now been clarified who the lion belongs to.
Almost half a year ago strangers had the figure, once the stern figure of the steamship “Bavaria”, smeared in bright colors, and not just a little. On the contrary: the lion was deliberately painted in bright colors. The city classifies this as vandalism, but cleaning the lion is anything but easy. Especially since it was initially not clear to whom the majestic statue actually belonged. It is now clear: the city bought the lion, which dates from 1878 and was made by the sculptor Lorenz Gedon (1843 - 1883), from the Free State in 1955.
Since the question of ownership has now been resolved, the following applies: The city is responsible for the restoration and, according to information from the town hall, has coordinated with the monument protection authorities.
“Getting the paint off again without damaging the material or the surface of the statue is unfortunately complicated.
A restorer has already carried out a few attempts with different methods, but has not yet found a suitable one, ”said the city administration on request.
The plan is to remove the color from the lion in the spring.
Since the procedure has not yet been determined, no statements can be made about the costs.
A few hundred euros, however, will probably not be enough.
There are no known indications of who caused it, but six months ago there was a series of damage to property on the lake promenade.
