Participants in a dialogue workshop held today by the Daraa Agriculture Directorate on the amendment of Forestry Law No. 6 of 2018 called for a review of penalties and the creation of a forestry court.

The participants pointed to the need to amend the definition of forest timber and wood, to clarify the role of the local community in protecting forests, and to oblige owners of real estate and land on public roads to plant forest plants on one or two parallel lines and to allocate properties for charcoal to prevent fires and to secure coal.

The Director of Forestry at the Ministry of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform, Engineer Ali Thabet, explained that the aim of the workshop is to protect forests and reach a new version of Law No. 6 of 2018 through visions and ideas that would develop and protect forest wealth, pointing to the role of municipalities in the field of attention to forest trees and launching afforestation campaigns. Parallel to the campaigns launched by the Ministry of Agriculture.

In turn, the Director of Daraa Agriculture, Engineer Bassam Al-Hashish, stated that the workshop's goal was to amend the forestry law to suit the current reality, especially in light of the encroachments and fires that affected large areas of forest trees.

The head of the Forestry Department in the Directorate, Eng. Jamil Al-Abdullah, reviewed the reality of the forests in Daraa and the unfair logging and cutting in several locations that require awareness from the local community and concerted governmental and popular efforts to preserve the forest wealth, indicating that the proportion of forests is good and there are no endangered species.

The area of ​​forests in Daraa is 10,324 hectares of artificial forest and 300 hectares of natural forest.

The workshop was attended by the Governor of Daraa, Eng. Louay Map.
