A sad change in state politics: Marcel Huber, ex-minister valued by all, leaves politics in a completely surprising way.

His wife is seriously ill and he wants to be by her side.

A bitter loss not only for the CSU.

Munich / Mühldorf - There were so many nights that the bad news woke Marcel Huber.

He is with the Ampfing volunteer fire brigade, deployed in smaller and larger disasters, embankment fires on the nearby autobahn and fatal accidents.

Always reliable, always stable: he helped out in his time as a veterinarian, then as a member of the state parliament, as state secretary, and even as a minister he was available for his comrades at night when the alarm went off.

Ex-Environment Minister Marcel Huber stops politics - his wife is seriously ill

And now an alarm, a catastrophe that throws Marcel Huber off track. His wife Adelgunde was diagnosed with serious cancer. Suddenly it came, chemotherapy had already started, but the situation is not good. Huber, 63, has therefore decided to take a radical cut: he gives up his mandate immediately, including important honorary posts. “I was not at home very much,” he says, referring to his political years, his wife always managed the family. “Now my place is by my wife's side. Period. “The two have been married since 1982, with three children.

Huber announced the waiver of his mandate on Tuesday to the President of the State Parliament Ilse Aigner (CSU *).

The successor will be Andreas Lorenz from Munich.

A very small group of party friends had been told in, trying to change his mind;

vain.

Huber is always there for others, see the fire brigade - but not one who would let politics, the parliamentary mandate in Mühldorf *, which was achieved by a large margin, drag, take care of other things for a few months.

His retreat into private life will now be complete, and he will also be relinquishing leadership of the Music Council and the legendary Catholic Men's Association in Tuntenhausen.

Marcel Huber was valued by party friends and the opposition

"I really regret that," says Aigner. "Very competent, very honest, very much appreciated" is Huber. In fact, many say that about the down-to-earth, indecent CSU MP who is respected across party lines. In his duties as Environment Minister and Head of State Chancellery from 2011 to 2018, he was also offensive and had scandals under his belt (Müller-Brot and others). However, his personal integrity was never questioned. “There are worse things than you,” a leading Green politician once called to him, and that was meant as nicely as it was honest at the time. When Horst Seehofer was Prime Minister, he pronounced Huber's first name consistently incorrectly (“Marzzl”), but saw in him one of the great pillars of the Council of Ministers.

At the end of 2018, Huber left the cabinet, Markus Söder * no longer wanted him.

His dream job as President of the State Parliament was suddenly taken.

Huber wore it with composure and dignity.

“I understand that there are compulsions in a coalition,” he said at the time.

“That's politics.” You haven't heard any complaints or complaints since then.
