New York-Sana
Iran has warned once again that some Western countries continue to exploit the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons to achieve political goals, stressing that Syria has implemented all its obligations towards the Treaty on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, while the United States and the Zionist entity remain the main obstacle to the complete elimination of these weapons.
The Assistant Permanent Representative of Iran to the United Nations, Zahra Ershadi, said during a meeting of the UN Security Council yesterday: “There is no justification for holding monthly meetings by the Security Council to discuss the so-called Syrian chemical file, as the Syrian government implemented its obligations on the basis of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, which is what was done confirmed by the organization.
Irshady stressed that such meetings, instead of supporting the goals of the treaty, weaken its capacity and credibility, and deepen the Security Council's credibility crisis, renewing her country's position on the use of chemical weapons by any party, anywhere and under any circumstances.
Irshadi added, "The absolute guarantee that chemical weapons will not be used again is their removal from all parts of the world, and this is the basic goal of the Chemical Weapons Convention, and it can be achieved only through its full, balanced, effective and non-discriminatory implementation by all countries of the world, especially the United States."
Irshady renewed her call to the Security Council to compel the Israeli occupation entity to join the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Chemical and Nuclear Weapons without any precondition or further delay.
