The World Health Organization reported today that the rate of new infections with the Corona virus around the world increased during the past seven days by 71 percent.
The organization indicated a jump of 71 percent in the weekly number of infections, and said that it amounts to a “tsunami” with the spread of the new “Omicron” mutant around the world.
In its weekly report on the pandemic, the organization indicated that the weekly number of infected cases was slightly less than 9.5 million new cases, and more than 41,000 new deaths were reported during the past week.
In turn, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization, said: "Last week, we recorded the largest number of Covid-19 infections so far since the outbreak of the pandemic."
He added: The organization is certain that these numbers are underestimated due to the backlog of tests during the end of the year holiday.
For his part, the head of emergencies at the World Health Organization, Dr. Michael Ryan, said that speculation that Omicron may be the latest type of outbreak was optimistic thinking, warning that there is still a lot of energy in this virus.
